The father of Akashdeep Singh, a 23-year-old youth from Rajatal village in Amritsar district who was among the first batch of deported migrants from the United States to land in India on Feb. 5, expressed a mix of relief and sorrow upon his son’s return.

“We received the information from officials of Punjab police that my son Akashdeep Singh has been deported from US and he is arriving at Amritsar airport in the afternoon,” Swaran Singh told New India Abroad, his voice heavy with emotion. The news brought both anxiety and relief to the family, who had invested their hopes and savings in Akashdeep’s pursuit of a better future abroad.
