Madhya Pradesh, a central Indian state known as the "Heart of India" for its geographic location, has announced plans to develop over 50 lesser-known travel sites and tourist destinations, solidifying its reputation as a haven for those seeking unique and serene travel experiences.
This initiative, aimed at both international and domestic tourists, offers a refreshing alternative to the heavily visited spots across India, showcasing Madhya Pradesh’s diverse cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and natural beauty. The state’s strategy focuses on promoting responsible travel and sustainable development, making it an attractive destination for those looking for off-the-beaten-path experiences.
Principal secretary for Tourism and Culture, Sheo Shekhar Shukla, highlighted the state’s goal to cater to tourists interested in experiential travel, away from the hustle of overcrowded destinations.
“Madhya Pradesh is delighted to be offbeat – clean, green, and safe," Shukla said, emphasizing the state's commitment to offering travelers an enriching escape. “With the tourism footfall tripling in 2023 to 112.1 million from 34.1 million in 2022, we are focused on creating distinctive itineraries that attract both international and domestic tourists while avoiding over-tourism."
According to a news release, the tourism board is continuously curating experiential tourism choices that highlight Madhya Pradesh's rich natural and cultural assets. Key attractions in the offbeat tourism plan include the iconic Gwalior Fort, known for its historical significance and panoramic views, and the Balancing Rock of Jabalpur, a geological marvel.
Sites like the Maheshwar Fort, which sits on the tranquil banks of the Narmada River, and the Udaigiri Caves, famed for their intricate rock-cut sculptures, will also be part of this new development. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to exploring Pench National Park, home to diverse wildlife, including the majestic leopard, frequently spotted in the park.
The pristine and safe environment of Madhya Pradesh is a major attraction for tourists. Moreover, initiatives like the construction of a women-run hotel in Pachmarhi demonstrate the state’s leadership in responsible tourism. As part of its commitment to inclusive growth, Madhya Pradesh is set to train 40,000 women in tourism-related roles, empowering local communities while strengthening its tourism sector.
