Maine Governor proposes new office to support immigrants
The Office of New Americans would make Maine a home of opportunity for all.

Governor Janet Mills has proposed the creation of an Office of New Americans (ONA) within the Maine State Government. Her proposal is backed by business owners, immigrant advocates, municipal leaders, lawmakers, and other stakeholders.
Given the record-low unemployment rates, robust economic growth, and a widespread shortage of workers across various sectors in Maine, the proposal aims to address the workforce needs by introducing and integrating New Americans into the state's communities and economy.
This strategy is considered crucial for Maine's economic future, particularly in sectors like healthcare, education, and construction, where there is a pressing need for skilled workers.
Under the plan, the ONA would be responsible to make Maine “a home of opportunity for all, by welcoming and supporting immigrants to strengthen Maine’s workforce, enhance the vibrancy of Maine’s communities, and build a strong and inclusive economy,” a release from the governor's office stated.
The office will consist of a team of four individuals, along with a 19-member advisory council. It will tasked with guiding ONA on issues pertaining to the lasting economic and civic integration of immigrants in Maine.
The office will focus on various aspects, including enhancing opportunities for English-language acquisition, creating pathways and support for immigrant entrepreneurs, coordinating organizations and entities supporting immigrants, engaging with federal immigration policies, and enhancing the state's data on its immigrant populations.
Governor Mills presented the plan at American Roots, a textile manufacturer located in Westbrook. The company has expanded its business and workforce through collaboration with the New American community in Maine.
“Everywhere you look across Maine, there are help wanted signs. We need workers, and New Americans, who want to support themselves and their families, can be one important part of that solution,” Mills said.
“My Administration will do what we can to ensure that every person can contribute to our economy and successfully enter and stay in our workforce. As we strengthen our economy by attracting talented people to work in Maine, may this Office help us fully harness the contributions of New Americans who have chosen to make our state their home,” she added.
