To gauge Canadian opinion on the diplomatic rift between India and Canada, CTV News commissioned Nanos Research to conduct a public survey. According to the poll, the majority of respondents agree with Prime Minister Trudeau's claim that he has evidence suggesting India was responsible for the murder of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.
Tensions between the two countries escalated last month when Trudeau announced in the Canadian Parliament that his government was "actively pursuing credible allegations" linking Indian government agents to the murder of the Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia in June.
As per the findings, 47 percent of Candians firmly believed their Prime Minister’s assertions while 27 percent respondents said they somewhat believe his clams. The results also found that Older Canadians (55+) were more likely to believe or somewhat believe Prime Minister Trudeau’s statement than younger Canadians.
However, when asked about the way forward for Canada in dealing with the situation, most Canadians say they would prefer for Canada to decrease tensions with India and engage in diplomatic talks about the murder (57 percent). About one in four prefer that Canada increase tensions with India by further investigating the allegations that India was potentially behind the murder (26%) while One in ten (11%) want Canada to be patient and do nothing in the short term.
Nanos conducted an RDD dual frame (land-and celllines) hybrid telephone and online random survey of 1,058 Canadians, 18 years of age or older, between October 1- 4, 2023 as part of an omnibus survey.
