Malaysia Airlines has made a historic return to Kolkata, India, resuming direct flights after an 18-year hiatus. The relaunch highlights the strong ties between Malaysia and India, home to one of the largest Indian diasporas globally.
Indians constitute about 8 percent of Malaysia’s population, making them the second-largest minority group in the country. Globally, Malaysia hosts the third-largest Indian diaspora, following the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
The airline commenced its five-weekly flights on Dec.2, 2024. The outbound flight MH184 departs from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) at 9:35 PM local time and arrives at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) at 11:00 PM local time, with a flight duration of three hours and 45 minutes. The route is serviced by Malaysia Airlines' B737-800 aircraft.
"We are delighted to recommence direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and the bustling metropolis of Kolkata, strengthening the bond between Malaysia and India while opening exciting opportunities for both leisure and business travelers," said Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, Chief Executive Officer of Airlines at Malaysia Airlines Group.
The relaunch enhances Malaysia Airlines’ connectivity across India through its partnership with IndiGo. The codeshare agreement, effective since October 2024, expands Malaysia Airlines’ network to 16 destinations across India.
Under this arrangement, Malaysia Airlines’ flight code "MH" covers seven domestic destinations, including Varanasi, Patna, Tiruchirappalli, Goa, Bhubaneswar, and Visakhapatnam, in addition to Kolkata.
