'Manjummel Boys’ has shattered records, becoming the first Malayalam film to cross the $2.4 billion mark globally within just 26 days of its release on Feb 22. Surpassing the previous milestone set by '2018: Everyone is a Hero’, Manjummel Boys’ became the highest-grossing movie in Malayalam cinema history.

Director Chidambaram curated the cast, which featured Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Jean-Paul, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, and others. With Parava Films and Sree Gokulam Films as producers, the movie was based on a true incident from 2006.

The plot revolves around a group of friends who go on a vacation to Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu. Their exploration takes a dark turn when they stumble upon Guna Caves, a restricted area. Ignoring warnings, they venture deeper, as one of them falls into the pit. The desperate struggle for survival sets goosebumps and tells a gripping tale of sheer determination and the futile nature of life.

Award-winning Indian filmmaker and director, Anurag Kashyap, reviewed the film on Letterboxd, calling it an “extraordinary” piece. “Simply extraordinary piece of confident mainstream filmmaking. So much better than all the big budget filmmaking in India. Such confidence, such impossible storytelling. I was wondering how does one even sell this idea to a producer. In Hindi they can only do remakes of such ideas. Hindi cinema really is so far left behind with three back to back brilliant Malayalam films,” Kashyap wrote.

The film amassed over $360K on its opening day. Fuelled by word-of-mouth publicity, it resonated with audiences nationwide, raking in an estimated ₹107.60 crore in India alone. Moreover, the 135-minute film made a hit in over 100 film theatres across the UK and Europe.

‘Manjummel Boys’ is also the third highest-grossing Indian film of 2024 so far.
