The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has named Shiv G. Kapoor, as the namesake of this year’s SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award.
SME names the award annually to recognize an individual’s lifelong contributions to manufacturing, commitment to mentoring young engineers, and active organizational involvement. In a statement, SME leadership praised Kapoor’s accomplishments as exemplary of the award’s purpose.
Kapoor, a professor emeritus in the department of mechanical science and engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, expressed gratitude for the recognition. “I am truly overwhelmed by this incredible recognition by SME. It is a tremendous honor to be placed in such distinguished rank as that of the past honorees, who have made important contributions to manufacturing education, research and professional service,” Kapoor said.
“I am deeply appreciative of this honor and grateful to my colleagues, friends and, specially, to talented students who made my academic journey so fruitful,” he added.
Throughout his career, Kapoor led research in manufacturing process modeling and automation. His later work focused on micro/meso-scale mechanical manufacturing, pioneering advancements in miniaturized equipment and autonomous microfactories. His research laid the foundation for mass customization through distributed manufacturing.
Kapoor holds the title of Grayce Wicall Gauthier Chair Emeritus and Professor Emeritus. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, M.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, and B.Sc. from the Indian Institute of Technology Banaras Hindu University.
The 2025 SME Shiv Kapoor Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award recognizes 10 manufacturing engineers, age 35 or younger, who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to the industry early in their careers. Recipients will be honored at SME events throughout the year.
SME, a nonprofit organization, promotes the adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies and workforce development, supporting North America's industrial growth through education, research, and professional recognition.
