Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller announced her endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris to be the next President of the United States. This came after President Joe Biden stepped aside amid concerns from within their party that he would be unable to defeat Republican Donald Trump and declared his endorsment for VP Kamala Harris. Harris, expressing her gratitude through a statement from the Biden-Harris campaign, highlighted her dedication to securing the nomination. "I am honored to have the President’s endorsement, and I am determined to earn and win this nomination," she stated.
In a statement released on July.22, Miller emphasized the enduring patriotism exemplified by President Joe Biden and the necessity of continued leadership in the same vein. Quoting Adlai Stevenson, Aruna Miller stated, “Patriotism is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime. President Biden is the quintessential example of this. His lifetime of dedication to our country shows what true patriotism looks like.”
Miller highlighted Biden’s extensive public service career, noting, “From beginning his public service journey as a county councilman in 1970 to becoming one of the youngest U.S. Senators in history, Joe Biden's commitment to our nation is unwavering. He served as Vice President to the first Black American President and now holds the highest office in the land, dedicating over 50 years to public service.”
She also praised Biden’s impact on Maryland and his prioritization of democracy, stating, “President Biden understands the threats we face to our democracy. He prioritized our nation's future in an ultimate display of patriotism, by placing country above self-interest. As he has done for more than five decades, President Biden continues to be the leader we need.” She also acknowledged the contributions of Governor Wes Moore.
Expressing her support for Vice President Harris, Miller concluded, “I am honored to follow their lead and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. When Vice President Harris is sworn in as the 47th President of United States in January 2025, after almost 250 years, a woman of color will write our nation's next chapter—one built on inclusivity, opportunity, and hope, showing the limitless possibilities that lie ahead for every young person in our nation.”
In an effort to move past weeks of internal conflict regarding the candidacy of 81-year-old Biden, influential Democratic elected officials, party leaders, and political organizations swiftly rallied around Harris following his announcement to withdraw from the re-election race.
