Indian American founder of Parity Lab, Mathangi Swaminathan has been chosen as a 2023 Echoing Green Fellow from the 1,900 applications. Echoing Green said that the new cohort of fellows are launching and growing innovative social enterprises to address some of the world’s most urgent challenges.

Swaminathan was chosen for her non-profit in Trenton, United States, that seeks to eliminate violence against women and girls from the bottom up. The organization works towards addressing gender-based violence by identifying, supporting, and amplifying a community of survivor-led grassroots organizations addressing the root causes of violence.

As part of the fellowship, Swaminathan will receive a US$80,000 stipend, and leadership development to support Parity Lab’s mission. An innovative accelerator for community-led organizations, Swaminathan’s commitment to gender equity stems from her own traumatic experience as a survivor of violence.

Previously, Swaminathan co-directed Waste Ventures India. She has led efforts to train and formalize employment from the informal waste picker community while providing recycling services to households and corporations in India. Through her work with Foster America, she evaluated community-led preventive solutions to child abuse against government-led responsive solutions.

An alumna of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, an Acumen India fellow, and a World Economic Forum Global Shaper, Swaminathan was awarded the 2019 Jane Mansbridge Award by Harvard University for her work on reducing gender bias in organizations. She completed her master's in business administration, marketing, finance, and public policy from the Indian School of Business after her bachelor's degree in computer engineering from Anna University, Chennai.
