Mauritius is like ‘Mini India’: PM Modi in address to diaspora

Modi highlighted the emotional and familial ties between India and the Mauritian Indian community.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the Indian community in Mauritius, described the island nation as "Mini India," emphasizing the enduring cultural and historical connections between the two countries. 

Speaking at a special event at the Trianon Convention Centre alongside Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Modi acknowledged the contributions of the Indian diaspora in preserving their heritage.

"Whenever I come to Mauritius, it feels like I am among my own," Modi said, highlighting the emotional and familial ties between India and the Mauritian Indian community. In a significant announcement, he stated that the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card would now be extended to the seventh generation of the Indian diaspora in Mauritius, strengthening their connection with India.

During the event, Prime Minister Ramgoolam announced that Mauritius would confer its highest civilian award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (G.C.S.K), on Modi. Expressing gratitude, Modi stated, "The people and the government of Mauritius have decided to confer upon me their highest civilian honour, and I humbly accept this decision with great respect. This is not just an honour for me, it is an honour for the historic bond between India and Mauritius."

Modi reaffirmed India’s special relationship with Mauritius, stating, "Mauritius is not just a partner country; for us, Mauritius is family." He noted that Mauritius plays a central role in India's Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) vision and praised the nation’s participation in the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance.

He also highlighted India’s ongoing cultural and economic collaborations, mentioning the revival of Nalanda University and the increasing global recognition of Indian agricultural products. "Bihar's Makhana will soon become a part of snack menus worldwide," he said.

Earlier in the day, Modi planted a sapling at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden as part of the "Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam (Plant4Mother)" initiative. The event featured cultural performances by artistes from the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture (IGCIC), Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI), and Anna Medical College.
