Indian American tennis player, Maya Dutta from Boise State University was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year by the Mountain West all- conference on April 22.

The conference is an NCAA Division I athletic gathering comprising universities from the western United States. The annual Freshman of the Year award honors the most outstanding first-year player across all conference teams.

Dutta, a Dallas native with roots in Kolkata, is only the second player in Boise State history to earn the honor, joining Wihelmina Palmer (2018). She and teammate Zdena Safarova also earned All-Mountain West honors in both singles and doubles, making them the first Bronco pair since 2019 to do so in the same season.

Dutta compiled a 12-5 singles record this spring, playing primarily in the No. 2 position. All her wins came in straight sets, including five against conference opponents. In doubles, she partnered with Safarova at the No. 1 spot.

She broke the conference record for most Freshman of the Week awards in a single season with six, surpassing the previous mark of five. She also added one Player of the Week honor, setting a Boise State record for most weekly accolades in a career.

The duo won the doubles title at the inaugural Mountain West Fall Qualifier and earned direct entry into the ITA Conference Masters — a first for a Boise State team.
