Indian American actress Megan Suri is among the 'Seven Rising Stars’ of Teen Vogue's New Hollywood Class of 2024, reflecting the unique perspectives of young artists in the industry.
The list includes teen heartthrobs, indie standouts, and former child stars, striving to understand their growing influence on fans and how to wield that power.
This year’s portfolio “is about the relationship between the individual and the collective, how each young person on our list brings a singular perspective to what they create in the world, and how that perspective came to be,” an official statement added.
Even though she made her Hollywood debut in 2010 at the age of 13 in the first volume of the holiday-themed trilogy ‘Valentine's Day,’ Suri told Teen Vogue that her part in Netflix's ‘Never Have I Ever’ gave her "a more recognizable name and face."
She debuted as Aneesa, a new student at Sherman Oaks High who struggles with eating disorders, excels in sports, and eventually discovers she is bisexual. "Thankful for that slowed trajectory to being a public figure," she said in the interview
She went on to say that she would have been "a menace" if she had this popularity when she was a teenager. “People equate being famous to being important, and that’s just not true,” Suri maintained.
Suri has portrayed the role of Mina's (Preity Zinta) daughter in the ABC series ‘Fresh Off the Boat.’ Alongside Zinta and Vir Das, she had an appearance in the episode ‘Magic Motor Inn,’ which focused on an Indian family whose daughter (Suri) goes to school with Eddie Huang (Hudson Yang).
Her first major part was in the coming-of-age dramedy ‘The MisEducation of Bindu,’ directed by Prarthana Mohan. The film followed 14-year-old Indian teenager Bindu as she navigated her identity and integration in high school.
In addition, she played a goth employee at a convenience store in the TV series ‘Poker Face.’ Suri landed her first major part in Bishal Dutta's horror film ‘It Lives Inside,’ influenced by Hindu mythology and released in 2023.
“I’m not Jennifer Lawrence or anything," the 24 year-old noted, adding "but if I could tell a younger me that I got this far, I don’t think she would believe it.”
