An Indian American resident in New Jersey was arrested on charges of first-degree murder of a 61-year-old who is reportedly his father.
According to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office the accused Melvin Thomas was arrested for murdering Manuel V Thomas along with the desecration of human remains, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and hindering.
The prosecutor's office did not mention the nature of the relationship between the deceased and the accused. As per India Today, neighbors said that a father and son lived in the home. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Paramus Police Department investigated the matter.
The incident unfolded when the Paramus Police responded to reports of a possible homicide on February 16 at 693 Bruce Drive, Paramus. Upon reaching the scene, officers located Manuel V Thomas in the basement of his residence with multiple wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
32-year-old Melvin was identified as the suspect and taken into police custody. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail, awaiting the first court appearance at the Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
As per reports, Melvin is an alumnus of St Stephen’s College Uzhavoor in Kottayam, Kerala. The deceased was an insurance professional and lost his wife in 2021.
