A new exhibition titled "Indian Skies: The Howard Hodgkin Collection of Indian Court Painting" premiered at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on February 6. Consul General of India in New York, Binaya Pradhan spoke at the opening.

Considered among the most exceptional collections of its genre, the collection at the exhibition provides a unique and intimate glimpse into India's revered painting tradition, showcasing recently acquired artworks from the personal collection of the artist. The pieces by British artist Howard Hodgkin encompass pieces originating from the Mughal, Deccan, Rajput, and Pahari courts, spanning the 16th to the 19th century.

“Consul General @binaysrikant76 spoke at the opening of the "Indian Skies: The Howard Hodgkin Collection of Indian Court Paintings" at @metmuseum, featuring over 120 masterpieces spanning Mughal, Deccan, Rajput, and Pahari courts,” the Consulate General of India in New York said in a post on X.

“Director of The MET, Max Hollein, commented that the collection was interwoven with the artist’s life—and his experiences in India and his relationships with scholars and artists of Indian art. CG referred to rich tradition of paintings and mentioned that this exhibition gives the visitors a chance to closely understand Indian culture and values,” the Consulate added.

The exhibition will showcase more than 120 examples of Indian court paintings meticulously amassed by Hodgkin over the course of his lifetime. The paintings will be organized chronologically by courts, commencing with the earliest pieces from the 16th-century Mughal era and related Deccani works. Subsequently, the exhibition will progress to showcase works from the later Rajput and Pahari courts.

A separate section will be dedicated to the celebration of elephant paintings, encompassing examples from all schools. Additionally, the presentation will feature Hodgkin's own paintings, such as "Small Indian Sky" and "In Mirza’s Room," displayed alongside related Indian works.
