BITS Pilani, a Rajasthan-based University, has awarded an honorary doctorate to Indian-American business leader Sanjay Mehrotra during its annual convocation on Nov. 10

Currently serving as president and CEO of Micron Technology, an Idaho-based leader in semiconductors, Mehrotra was recognised for his four-decade career in the global semiconductor industry.

Born in Kanpur, India, in 1958, Mehrotra pursued his early studies at BITS Pilani. At 18, he transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer science. He later completed an executive education program at Stanford University.

In 1988, Mehrotra co-founded SanDisk, a key player in flash storage technology, serving as its president and CEO until the company was acquired by Western Digital in 2016. At Micron, he leads a  global team and drives innovation in memory and storage solutions.

In his acceptance speech, Mehrotra expressed his gratitude for the strong foundation that BITS Pilani provided during his initial two years of undergraduate studies, which paved the way for his successful transition to UC Berkeley. He acknowledged the institution’s ability for nurturing talent, driving innovation, and excellence.

In his address to the graduating class, the significance of artificial intelligence was underscored by Mehrotra, with an emphasis on the opportunities it presents. Students were encouraged to seize these opportunities and were urged to pursue their dreams with courage.

Commenting on the award, Ramgopal Rao, vice chancellor of BITS Pilani, expressed the institution's pride, saying, “It is a privilege for BITS Pilani to honor Mehrotra, whose contributions to technology are significant.”
