Mindy Kaling was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Feb.18, marking a historic moment as the first South Asian woman to receive this recognition. The tribute, located at 6533 Hollywood Blvd., celebrated Kaling’s groundbreaking contributions to television as an actor, writer, and producer.
Kaling, best known for her work on The Office as a writer, producer, and cast member and for creating and starring in The Mindy Project, was joined at the ceremony by friends and colleagues, including fellow Office writer and actor B.J. Novak.
“I’m so happy, I love recognition,” Kaling joked as she accepted the honor.
The actor and writer reflected on the milestone's significance, tying it to her thoughts on legacy. “I’m Hindu, and we practice cremation, which is a beautiful tradition that my ancestors have done for thousands of years,” she said. “And so will I. But also, I’m obsessed with legacy. So sometimes I get disappointed that I won’t have a grave. But this, this is so much better than a grave.”
Kaling also took a moment to thank her fans. “I am so grateful to the fans of my work and the audience who got me here, who believed in me enough to think that I was a star, who watched my shows, even if their boyfriends said, ‘That looks lame.’ … I’m grateful to anyone who could just watch me in a movie or pick up my book of essays and wonder what’s on my mind.”
A trailblazer in television, Kaling made history in 2010 as the first woman of color to receive an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. She was also among the producers of The Office, nominated five times for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Her star on the Walk of Fame cements her legacy in Hollywood, not just as a creative force but as a cultural icon who has paved the way for greater diversity in entertainment.
