Minita Sanghvi announces candidacy for NY Senate

Minita Sanghvi is challenging Republican Nicholas Tedisco who has represented the 44th State Senate District in New York since 2016

Indian American Democrat Minita Sanghvi has announced her candidacy for the 44th State Senate District in New York’s Capital Region. The district is currently represented by Republican candidate James Nicholas Tedisco who was first elected on November 8, 2016.

“We need a leader who will put people ahead of partisan politics in Albany and focus on solutions. I’m not a politician. I’m a parent, business educator, and fiscally responsible public servant, and I’ve built a record of listening to people and working with others to deliver results that improve quality of life while keeping spending down,” Sanghvi said in a statement.

Born in Mumbai, the financial capital of India, in a conservative family of entrepreneurs and innovators, Sanghvi immigrated to the U.S. in 2001. She worked as an assistant manager at Walmart, dabbled in corporate marketing, and eventually started her own business. She currently serves as a professor and has taught business at Skidmore College for almost a decade.

Sanghvi has also authored two books – Happy Endings, published in 2022; and Gender and Political Marketing in the United States and the 2016 Presidential Election: An Analysis on Why She Lost, published in 2018.

Sanghvi’s decision to move to the US was fueled by the promise of the opportunity to be herself and pursue her dream of getting married and raising a family. She is married to her wife Megan, and together they are raising their son.

In 2021, she was elected her to serve as the Saratoga Springs Finance Commissioner and was appreciated for her fiscally responsible approach that led her to be called the “voice of reason” on the council, according to her bio on the campaign website.
