Indian American Democrat Minita Sanghvi has officially secured the Democratic nomination for New York’s 44th State Senate district.
She received endorsements from the Saratoga County Democratic Committee and Schenectady County Democratic Committee, according to a statement from her campaign office.
“It's official. I'm honored to get the support from both Schenectady and Saratoga Dem committees,” the Mumbai-born politician posted on X, simultaneously as her campaign rolled out the information, as per a report.
“Excited and honored to be unanimously endorsed by the Schenectady County Dem committee,” she posted early in the day on February 23. By evening, Sanghvi expressed joy at receiving the go-ahead from the Saratoga Democratic Committee as well.
Sanghvi launched her campaign for the New York State Senate in January 2024. She is challenging Republican James Nicholas Tedisco, the current representative of the 44th Senate District who was first elected to the position on November 8, 2016.
“We need a leader who will put people ahead of partisan politics in Albany and focus on solutions. I’m not a politician. I’m a parent, business educator, and fiscally responsible public servant, and I’ve built a record of listening to people and working with others to deliver results that improve quality of life while keeping spending down,” Sanghvi noted in a statement.
Sanghvi immigrated to the US in 2001. She worked as an assistant manager at Walmart, dabbled in corporate marketing, and eventually started her own business. She currently serves as a professor and has taught business at Skidmore College for almost a decade.
Her decision to move to the US was fueled by the promise of the opportunity to be herself and pursue her dream of getting married and raising a family. She has a wife named Megan and they are raising their son together.
