The Metropolitan Police have announced that the 23-year-old Indian student in UK has been found dead. Gurashman Singh Bhatia was reported missing on December 15, 2023.
According to police reports, Bhatia’s body was recovered from the water in South Quay on December 20. Shedding light on the investigation, the Metropolitan Police disclosed that CCTV footage revealed his last known presence in the South Quay area at around 04:20 am on Friday, December 15, 2023.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, overseeing local policing in Tower Hamlets, conveyed the news of Bhatia's demise and expressed his deep condolences to the deceased’s family and friends."This is an extremely tragic outcome and is not the news we were hoping to give to Gurashman’s family and friends. I send them my deepest condolences," he said.
Gurashman Singh Bhatia's sudden and untimely death is considered unexpected, and although no evidence of suspicious circumstances has emerged, Conway stated a commitment to undertake a meticulous investigation to confirm it."Gurashman’s death is being treated as unexpected, and while there is nothing to suggest it was suspicious, we will ensure our investigation is as thorough as possible to confirm this,” Conway mentioned.
The Metropolitan Police have taken a proactive move in their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gurashman Singh Bhatia's death by releasing a CCTV image of Gurashman before his demise.
Making a fervent appeal to the community,James said, "We are releasing a CCTV image of Gurashman that was taken before his disappearance and would like anyone who may have seen him in the Marsh Wall area on the evening of Thursday, 14 December and in the early hours of Friday, 15 December, to contact us."
The information of Gurashman Singh Bhatia's demise was brought to attention by BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who was the first to bring attention to the missing person case on his social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). Sirsa had requested India's Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, and the High Commissioner of India in London to take appropriate action.
Bhatia, originally from Model Town in Punjab's Jalandhar, arrived in the UK in January 2023 to pursue a master's degree in digital science at Loughborough University. He was set to graduate in February 2024 from Loughborough University and had been elected as the student ambassador and school representative, according to his LinkedIn profile. Additionally, he worked part-time as a real estate agent with London Real Estate until November 2023. Before moving to the UK for postgraduate studies, he held various positions in well-known organizations based in India.
