Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his seventh visit to Tamil Nadu on Apr. 9, commencing with a roadshow that covered the constituencies of South Chennai and Central Chennai, serving as a robust platform to bolster the campaigns of Tamilisai Soundararajan in South Chennai and Vinoj P. Selvam in Central Chennai.
Following the roadshow, Modi's itinerary includes addressing a public gathering in Vellore on Apr. 10. This event aims to rally support for Pattali Makkal Katchi’s (PMK) Dharmapuri candidate, Sowmiya Anbumani, and A.C. Shanmugam, contesting under the New Justice Party's banner in Vellore with Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) backing.
Later that evening, the Prime Minister would visit Mettupalayam to extend support to the Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan, BJP's candidate from Nilgiris, and K. Annamalai, the state unit president and BJP candidate from Coimbatore.
A recent Times Now-ETG Survey forecasts a challenging performance by the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu. According to the survey, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ( DMK) is anticipated to secure 26 percent of the vote share; the BJP at 19 percent of the vote share: closely trailed by Congress at 18 percent; the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ( AIADMK) closely following at 17 percent. Other parties collectively are forecasted to capture 20 percent of the vote share.
However, despite the BJP's significant victory in 2019 Lok Sabha elections, it only secured 29 out of 129 seats in the five southern states. Most of these wins, 25 seats, came from Karnataka, while the remaining four were from Telangana. Notably, the BJP failed to secure any seats in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, where historically, it has never won a seat.
The BJP's performance has not been strong not just in Lok Sabha elections but also in Assembly elections across the region. For instance. over the past three Assembly elections held in 2011, 2016, and 2021, the BJP managed to secure only four seats in Tamil Nadu in 2021.
Political observers say that the bigger objective of the BJP is to try to make sufficient inroads in the overall electoral strength in Tamil Nadu so as to have an impact in the Assembly elections down the road. There is also considerable interest in how much the BJP eats into the electoral vote bank of the AIADMK, its ally until recently.
Tamil Nadu goes to the polls in Phase 1 of the Lok Sabha elections on April 19.
