Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation and the global Indian diaspora, on Jan. 9, officially kicking off the festivities of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) in Bhubaneswar.

In a heartfelt speech, Modi welcomed the attendees and commended them for staying connected with their cultural roots and heritage. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrated every two years, is a momentous occasion dedicated to honoring the contributions of the Indian diaspora to the nation’s progress.

Emphasizing the vital role of the Indian diaspora, Modi reiterated that the Indian government places immense importance on its overseas citizens. It is India’s responsibility to safeguard, protect, and support our diaspora, especially in times of crisis. Over the past decade, Indian embassies worldwide have ensured that help is always available to the diaspora, regardless of where they live. "We consider it our responsibility to help our diaspora during crises no matter where they are," Modi added.

This year’s event held special significance, as Modi praised Odisha for its rich cultural heritage, setting a vibrant tone for the celebrations. He also highlighted the historical importance of the day, reminding the audience that it was on Jan. 9, 1915, that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s struggle for independence.

The Prime Minister also underscored India’s evolving global stature, stating, "India is not only the mother of democracy, but democracy is an integral part of our lives." He proudly noted that the world now listens to India, which presents its views with strength and conviction, particularly those of the Global South. "India's strength lies in its heritage, and we can tell the world that the future does not lie in war, but in peace, as symbolized by Buddha," he said.

"India is not just a young nation; it is a nation of skilled youths," he said, highlighting the government's efforts to ensure that Indian youth are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in the global workforce. With the increasing demand for skilled workers worldwide, Modi emphasized that the government is committed to preparing the youth for international success.

The Prime Minister also celebrated India’s diverse cultural landscape, pointing out that the G20 meetings, held in various parts of the country, allowed the world to experience India’s incredible diversity first-hand. "We don’t need to learn about diversity; our lives are a testament to it," he remarked, celebrating the country’s pluralistic society.

In his speech, Modi also spoke about India’s advancements in science and technology, including the successful Chandrayaan-2 mission and the country’s growing space program. He also called attention to the upcoming Mahakumbh festivities, which symbolize the nation’s spiritual and cultural unity.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, first established in 2003 under the leadership of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has evolved into a biennial event that celebrates the invaluable contributions of the Indian diaspora. This year’s convention marks a significant milestone in the engagement between India and its global citizens.
