The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) has received an $85,000 donation from U.S.-based philanthropist and IIT Roorkee alumnus Mohinder L. Nayyar.
The gift marks the largest contribution from an overseas donor to the institute’s Directorate of Resource Generation and Alumni Relations (DORA) Office. It will establish the IIT Mandi Endowment Fund to promote academic excellence, support students in need, and enhance research initiatives, the institute said in a statement.
“This generous contribution will establish the IIT Mandi Endowment Fund to support needy students and academic and research excellence. A Tripartite MoU has been signed between Mr. Nayyar, IIT Mandi, and the IIT Roorkee Foundation to ensure its best utilization,” the institute said.
Expressing gratitude for the donation, IIT Mandi officials hailed Nayyar’s contribution as a step toward making the institute a leading hub for research and innovation. “A heartfelt thanks to Nayyar for his kind support in strengthening our academic and research ecosystem,” the statement read.
An internationally recognized specialist in piping, valves, materials and codes and standards, Nayyar, is a 1966 graduate of IIT Roorkee in mechanical engineering. He is an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) life fellow and recipient of IIT Roorkee’s 2016 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
A native of Punjab, India, Nayyar moved to the United States in 1971, with his wife and joined Bechtel as an engineer. He quickly advanced, working on nuclear power plants and collaborating with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Nayyar has authored globally recognized engineering books, including the Piping Handbook, widely used for nuclear specifications and served in leadership roles on international standards committees.
