Moldova has opened a new embassy in India’s National Capital. The inauguration of Moldova's embassy in New Delhi marks a significant milestone in strengthening India-Moldova relations, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
The minister expressed optimism about the potential for an Indian embassy in Moldova in the near future, calling the development a step towards deeper collaboration and friendship between the two nations.
Highlighting the importance of the inauguration held on Dec.15, Jaishankar described it as a key achievement in bilateral ties. “Every time an embassy opens here, I know we have done something right,” he stated, emphasizing India's increasing global engagement through the recent establishment of embassies and consulates worldwide.
According to the 2022 data by the Embassy of India Bucharest, the Indian community in Moldova numbers around 900, out of which about 850 are medical students.
Jaishankar underlined the shared commitments since India and Moldova established diplomatic relations in 1992, calling the opening of the Moldovan embassy a testament to these growing ties. He also recalled Moldova's critical assistance during Operation Ganga, which facilitated the evacuation of Indian students during the Ukraine crisis. “India will never forget it,” Jaishankar said.
The minister further appreciated Moldova’s embrace of yoga and Hindi, calling it a reflection of the robust cultural connections between the two countries. He noted India’s evolving relationship with Europe, describing it as “more dynamic and contemporary,” and highlighted the embassy’s opening as a practical step in strengthening diplomatic ties.
Later, Jaishankar shared details on social media platform X about productive discussions with Moldova's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi. The talks focused on expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly in investment, education, technology, and culture.
A significant outcome of the meeting was the signing of a declaration of intent on a Migration and Mobility Partnership. Jaishankar noted that the agreement would pave the way for new avenues of collaboration between India and Moldova.
