The United States Domestic Policy Council Director, Neera Tanden, has spoken out against what she sees as the exclusive attitude toward Indian Americans held by far-right Republicans who support the Make America Great Again movement.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Tanden wrote, “I am an Indian American who was born here, and it's crystal clear that the Democratic Party sees me as American, and a large part of the base of the Republican Party does not. I hope Indian Americans remember this moment at the next election. They don't see you as one of them. And never will.”

“You thought they just hated other immigrants. But it turns out there's no exception for you. As many of us have been telling you,” Tanden said.

Her remarks come amid a heated debate on the social media platform sparked by the appointment of Chennai-born engineer Sriram Krishnan as Senior Policy Advisor for Artificial Intelligence by President-elect Donald Trump.

MAGA activists like Laura Loomer slammed the appointment as Krishnan, a proponent of immigration reforms, has called for removing country caps on green cards to “unlock skilled immigration” in the U.S. They launched a barrage of racial attacks mocking his heritage and accusing him and highly skilled immigrants from India of “stealing jobs.”

However, a section of pro-MAGA supporters including Elon Musk and other Tech industry leaders also supported Krishnan’s views, stating that skilled immigration is vital for American innovation and maintaining competitive edge. The internal divide highlights the ongoing rift between the party’s pro-business faction and its nationalist wing.
