Mount Prospect proclaims November 1 as Diwali Awareness Day

Mount Prospect, a suburb of Chicago,Illinois, has officially declared Nov 1 as Diwali Awareness Day, highlighting its commitment to inclusivity and unity.
Mayor Paul Wm. Hoefert issued the proclamation, emphasizing the values of Diwali—light over darkness, unity, and compassion—aligning with the village’s dedication to a multicultural community. Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated globally by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, symbolizing renewal and togetherness.
During the proclamation event, Mayor Hoefert addressed Mount Prospect’s Indian and South Asian American residents, appreciating their rich cultural contributions. Extending the message beyond faith or background, he invited all residents to partake in the celebration, reinforcing Diwali’s universal themes of love, forgiveness, and kindness.
Rakesh Malhotra, president of the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation, delivered a speech, sharing the festival’s deeper meanings. Malhotra described Diwali as a time for reflection, unity, and recommitment to each other. "By acknowledging this festival, you honor not only the Indian heritage but also a universal vision of unity and hope," he said, and underscored the foundation’s mission to enhance cultural and economic ties between India and the United States, fostering partnerships that support a globally inclusive future.
