Marin Theatre’s patrons were requested to don their eastern best when they came to experience the theatrical production Mrs. Krishnan’s Party. Bright pink wrapped ladies and kurta clad men got a chance to get into a festive mood before they left home.
Brightly hued wraps: red, yellow, blue, pink organza shawls festooned the audience members who sat in a circle facing the center of the stage, arranged around the kitchen counter/dining table. A kingly Mahabali greeted them with conspiratorial wink to join him in a surprise Onam party in the back of Mrs. Krishnan’s store. His infectious joie de vi·vre got the party started.
New Zealand’s Indian Ink Theatre Company, staged the participative theatre production Mrs. Krishnan Party starring Kalyani Nagarajan as Mrs Krishnan. The show, written by Jacob Rajan and Justin Lewis, has been touring the U.S. for five years. They have perfected the recipe for success.
On the kitchen stove sits a large pot of dahl steaming the kitchen with aromatic vapors. An immersive experience, the audience is a part of the drama that unfolds. So immersed is the audience in the experience that they automatically start cleaning the kitchen and stirring the pot as Mrs Krishnan cooks. The delicious aroma engages all senses.
Prompted and encouraged, members of the audience float colorful balloons in the air as lights twinkle in an Onam constellation and Mrs Krishnan emerges in her Onam splendor.
In a Cat in The Hat moment when Mrs. Krishnan confronts an audience member with a “Did you know about it Jenny?” The audience member instinctively denies any knowledge of the conversation that had unfolded a few minutes ago.
Laughter and sadness, music and fun ensure that entering as strangers, the audience leaves as a community.
The choice of music is exceptional.
