Indian American fashion designer Naeem Khan has been named one of ten recipients of the 2023 National Design Awards, announced by New York-based Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. The Museum, in its statement, acknowledged Khan's focus on creating clothing that embodies beauty, glamour, and femininity while purposefully evolving his vision in the world of fashion.

Khan, who was born in Mumbai on May 21, 1958, is well-known for the hand-embroidery that his family's factory, which his grandfather founded many years ago, produces. In 1978, Khan moved to the United States and apprenticed for American designer Roy Halston Frowick, where he absorbed the ethos of modernism and the secrets of draping and cutting fabric to create clean, elegant, and timeless silhouettes.

Khan launched his eponymous collection in 2003 and began selling at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Since then, his collections have been worn by celebrities such as American singer Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, American actress Jennifer Lopez, American singer Taylor Swift, Canadian actress Rachel McAdams, Former First Lady Michelle Obama, Queen Noor of Jordan, and the Duchess of Cambridge.

He was inducted as a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2008. He launched the Naeem Khan Bridal collection in 2013. He has married model and jewelry designer Ranjana Kapadia.

Other recipients of the award include American graphic designer Seymour Chwast for design visionary, Biocement Tiles by Biomason for climate action, Kongjian Yu for landscape architecture, and Atlason for product design. The National Design Awards jury includes Carla Fernández Tena, Mexican fashion designer; Sara Zewde, American landscape architect; Dung Ngo (chair), editorial and creative director in print media; Tiffany Chu, chief of staff to Mayor Michelle Wu; and Noah Schwarz, director of product design at Herman Miller.
