Washington State University (WSU) has appointed Indian-American statistician Nairanjana Dasgupta as the chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
A Regents professor and researcher, Dasgupta succeeds Charles Moore, who retires after more than a decade of leadership at WSU. With a 28-year tenure at WSU, Dasgupta has significantly elevated the department’s visibility through her innovative approach to data applications. She will continue directing the interdisciplinary data analytics program, which she was instrumental in developing.
“Math and stats are everywhere and for everyone—and they are the foundation of our modern, digital life. I’m honored to serve as chair for a department that is so deeply connected to both the student experience and research excellence at WSU,” Dasgupta stated.
Interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Courtney Meehan lauded Dasgupta’s leadership, stating, “Dr. Dasgupta is not only a highly accomplished, internationally respected researcher, she is an outstanding leader and dedicated educator who brings out the best in her colleagues and collaborators, and her students.”
Dasgupta’s contributions include spearheading initiatives to enhance data literacy in underrepresented communities, supervising over 80 graduate students, and founding the WSU Center for Interdisciplinary Statistical Education and Research. Her numerous accolades include election as a fellow of the American Statistical Association and membership in the Washington State Academy of Sciences.
Dasgupta earned her bachelor's degree in statistics from Presidency College, Kolkata, before completing her master's and Ph.D. in statistics at the University of South Carolina. She joined WSU’s faculty in 1996 and became director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Statistics Education and Research in 2015.
