India’s historic seven-phase Lok Sabha elections finally came to a close after the Election Commission of India declared results on June.5. The poll body has stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 240 seats, while the Congress has won 99 seats. The total seats that went to polls are 543.

Vote counting began early morning on June.4 across states and union territories of India. Initially, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, seemed to be heading towards a landslide victory. However, as hours passed, things seemed tricky for the Narendra Modi-led government with the INDIA bloc putting up a tough fight.

While the Lok Sabha has 543 members, counting was held for 542 seats after the BJP’s Surat candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed.

The last result to be announced was that of the Beed constituency in Maharashtra, where Sharadchandra Pawar’s NCP candidate Bajrang Manohar Sonwane defeated the BJP’s Pankaja Munde by 6,553 votes.

Overall, the BJP fell short of the 272 majority mark after winning just 240 seats. They needed the support of their allies in the NDA to stake claim to form a government at the Centre. It was only with the support of its key allies N Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and Nitesh Kumar’s JD(U) in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, and other alliance partners, that the NDA finally managed to cross the halfway mark. While TDP won 16 seats in Andhra, JD(U) has won 12 seats in Bihar, respectively.

Two states that proved to be a major setback for the NDA were Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. In Maharashtra, the Congress won 13 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) won nine and Sharad Pawar's NCP won eight. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance won just 17 seats.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party won 37 seats, emerging as the single-largest party. The Congress won six seats. The BJP, which had scored landslide victories in 2014 and 2019, won just 33 seats.

Exit polls, however, had predicted a landslide victory for the BJP-led NDA this time. The elections were held from Apr.19 to June.1 in seven phases. More than 640 million votes were counted.
