Indian-origin engineer Neel Gunturi has been named among the latest recipients of the prestigious Sainsbury Engineering Management Fellows (SMF) scholarship, which aims to instill business, leadership, and managerial skills at the heart of UK industry.
Gunturi, who holds an MEng Hons degree, will study at INSEAD as part of the scholarship, which grants $63,000 (£50,000) to each recipient to pursue an MBA at one of the world’s top business schools.
Joining him in receiving the award are Tom Pickering, a Chartered Engineer with an MEng Hons degree, who will study at IESE, and Mayowa Ubebe, also an MEng Hons graduate, who will attend the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Commenting on the scholarship, Ubebe said, “I would like to build my soft skills in areas that are key to helping me become an effective leader such as sales, communication, influence, leadership strategy, and negotiation. This MBA will be fundamental to achieving my goal of making the transition from middle management to senior leadership, rising to the highest levels of leading energy companies and occupying decision-making roles on boards.”
The Sainsbury Management Fellows scholarship was established in 1987 by Lord Sainsbury of Turville to increase the presence of engineers in senior executive roles across UK companies. The initiative combines strong technological expertise with effective management training to help drive the UK economy forward.
Since its inception, over 400 engineers have received the scholarship, leading to the founding of more than 300 companies worth over $6 billion (£4.8 billion) and creating more than 20,000 jobs.
Following the completion of their MBAs, the scholars will join the wider SMF community, a network of accomplished professionals dedicated to sharing knowledge with young engineers through mentorship and various development activities.
The Engineering and Innovation Business Foundation (EIBF) awards up to 16 Sainsbury Management Fellows scholarships annually to talented engineers and scientists, promoting leadership excellence in the industry.
