Neena Singh becomes first Sikh Mayor of New Jersey Township

Neena Singh has made history by being elected as the first Sikh and Indian-American female Mayor of Montgomery Township in New Jersey.

Expressing gratitude at the swearing-in ceremony, Singh, said, “It’s an enormous privilege to be sworn in by trailblazer Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman as the first elected Sikh woman Mayor in New Jersey and the first Indian American woman Mayor.”

“What energizes and motivates me is the spirit of service. I strongly believe we all have a responsibility to give back, and I am blessed to do so in a town that reflects America’s diversity,” she added.
 



During the Montgomery Township reorganization meeting, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman said Singh embodies a commitment to public service.

“She has made her life’s work fighting for social justice, economic opportunity, and human rights for all. I am confident she’ll bring her experience and passion for the township to her term as Mayor,” she added.

Singh, a resident of Montgomery for 24 years, was unanimously elected by her fellow township committee members. She previously served as Deputy Mayor and township committeewoman. As an executive officer at STAND Central NJ, a non-profit, she worked on engaging and educating voters and empowering them to participate in democracy.

She is a recipient of the NJ Governor Synergy Award (2009). She earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and English literature from Kurukshetra University in India.
