A museum dedicated to revered Indian leader and advocate of non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi, will soon be established in New York City as city officials met with interested stakeholders to discuss the project on March 15.
The virtual meeting between the Gandhian Society and New York City (NYC) officials builds on their first meeting in December of 2023 when a potential Gandhi Museum in NYC was discussed.
The museum will be part of the Aditya Birla Group’s (ABG) “Eternal Gandhi Project,” that is focused on establishing museums worldwide to showcase the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
Nitin Mathuria, representing the group pitched the proposal to NYC representatives, including Commissioner of Cultural Affairs Laurie Cumbo, Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Affairs Alton Murray, Commissioner for International Affairs Edward Mermelstein and Deputy Commissioner of international affairs Dilip Chauhan.
Deputy Commissioner Murray provided valuable insights into the procedures for establishing such a venture in NYC. Commissioner Cumbo expressed her excitement and offered guidance on potential collaborations with other organizations and city agencies.
She also extended an invitation to Mathuria to visit NYC for further discussions and site visits to similar cultural institutions. Commissioner Mermelstein highlighted successful past projects where NYC has played a facilitating role.
