New York Indian Film Festival to honor Shabana Azmi
The actor will be recognized for contributions to Indian Cinema at 24th NYIFF

The New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) will pay tribute to Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi’s 50-year cinematic journey next month.
NYIFF, known as North America’s top Indian film festival, will run from May 31 to June 2, featuring 49 films, including narratives, documentaries, and shorts. Azmi's milestone will be commemorated with a special screening of her 1996 film 'Fire'.
The film, that depicts the stories of two Indian women stuck in loveless marriages, won Azmi, the Best Actress Award at the Chicago International Film Festival and the Los Angeles Outfest. It is considered a path breaking film for opening up conversations that were swept under the carpet.
The actor, who has won five National Film Awards and gained international recognition for her roles, is also expected to attend the festival. She will be hosted for a conversation with filmmaker Mira Nair during the event.
Apart from her acting career, Azmi is known for her activism, particularly for women's rights and the underprivileged. She has recently been nominated as Global Leadership Ambassador for Women in Public Service Project initiated by Hillary Clinton.
NYIFF will open with ’Dear Jassi’, directed by Indian-American filmmaker Tarsem Singh, and close with ‘Mrs’, featuring Sanya Malhotra and directed by Arati Kadav. These selections reflect NYIFF’s commitment to showcasing diverse voices in Indian cinema.
