The NHS Foundation Trust has appointed Steve Forsyth of Indian and Scottish descent as the chief nurse of Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber (RDaSH). Forsyth became the first man of South Asian heritage in the UK to be appointed as chief nurse.
“We’ve appointed Steve Forsyth as our chief nurse and he'll be the UK’s first male chief nurse of South Asian heritage,” the foundation posted on X. Forsyth will start with the new role in April 2024. He is bringing 24 years of nursing experience to the executive role at the trust, as per the NHS release.
Forsythpreviously served as the interim chief nurse at the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT) in June 2023. In an interview with the trust, Forsyth said he was inspired to work in the care industry by his mother who moved to the UK from Chandigarh, India, to work as a nurse with the NHS. He revealed that his 70-year-old mother is still active in the profession after 50 years of service.
“My mom was such an inspiration to me, seeing how much she loved her job, I knew I wanted to follow in her footsteps,” Forsyth said, adding that he has spent his entire life caring for people from various backgrounds, and considers it to be a privilege.
“As a proud brown man and from a global majority background, navigating the NHS has not always been easy for me. My mum inspired me to get into nursing and I am very grateful for the opportunities that I have been given over the last few years,” he added.
Forsyth began his career in 1997 with registered mental health training. He also worked as a B-grade healthcare assistant at the time. He also studied at universities in Birmingham and Stafford to develop his educational credentials.
