Nisha Pahuja’s ‘To Kill a Tiger’ bags Oscar nomination

The documentary premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022

‘To Kill a Tiger’, a Hindi documentary by Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja secured an Oscar nomination for Best Feature Documentary.

Set in India, the film tells the story of a family in Jharkhand, India, on a quest for justice for their teenage daughter. The creators extended their gratitude to the documentary branch of The Academy for recognizing their narrative of resilience and justice. 

Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, the documentary received multiple accolades, including being positioned on Canada's Top Ten list for 2022.

It won the Best Canadian Film at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, the Best Feature Length Documentary at the Canadian Screen Awards in 2023, and the Best Documentary at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, among several other accolades.

Pahuja is an Indian-born Canadian filmmaker based in Toronto. Some of her notable works include the Emmy-nominated 'The World Before Her,' the feature documentary 'Bollywood Bound,' and the three-part series 'Diamond Road.'

Pahuja studied English Literature at the University of Toronto. She collaborated with Canadian producer Geeta Sondhi, later finding her interest in documentaries. Her documentary ‘The World Before Her,’ which explored the complexities faced by young girls in India, won the Best Documentary award at the Tribeca International Film Festival. Renowned Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap even lent his name to the film for a theatrical release in India.

Her recent success with 'To Kill a Tiger' garnered her an Oscar nomination, with the New York Times listing it among the 'Most Anticipated Fall Releases' and leading American journalist Anne Thompson placing it in her Oscars' Contenders list for 2024.
