Canadian authorities have concluded their investigation into the tragic death of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur, an Indian-origin woman who was found dead inside a walk-in oven at a Walmart store's bakery department in Halifax on Oct.19.
In an official statement on Nov.18, Halifax Regional Police announced that the death was "not suspicious" and that investigators found "no evidence of foul play."
"We understand that there have been many questions about what happened. Thorough investigations take time," said Martin Cromwell, Public Information Officer for the Halifax police. "As part of the investigation, we conducted several interviews and reviewed video footage. I can share that our investigation has not led us to suspect foul play. We do not believe anyone else was involved. We acknowledge the public's interest in this case, and that there are questions that can never be answered," he added.
Gursimran Kaur, who had been working at Walmart for two years alongside her mother, was discovered by her mother in the bakery department. According to initial reports, she was found charred to death in the superstore’s walk-in oven.
Her family situation added to the tragedy—while her mother worked at Walmart, her father and brother remain in India.
The case attracted widespread attention after Walmart employees and social media users questioned the circumstances surrounding Kaur’s death.
Halifax police earlier described the investigation as "complex," involving multiple partner agencies. While the official conclusion rules out foul play, the incident has left many unanswered questions, with employees and the public struggling to reconcile the tragedy with the safety features of the equipment.
The incident has sparked discussions about workplace safety and prompted calls for greater transparency in investigating such cases. Walmart has not yet released an official statement on the findings.
