The 2012 shooting at Wisconsin’s Oak Creek Gurudwara, the first Sikh place of worship in the state that Michigan State Rep.Ranjeev Puri’s immigrant parents helped set up is what led him to pursue a political career and ultimately introduce a bill to expand the definition of hate crime and include vandalization of a place of worship in it.
“Gun violence is something that happens far too frequently in this country, but when the victims are people you know—your close family, your close friends, it really strikes you differently. And so that (gurudwara shooting) harrowing story and kind of the aftermath of the lack of coverage of that story really fueled me to kind of pursue a bigger platform to be able to speak out on these issues, “ Puri told NIA in an exclusive interview.
