The Oregon Health and Science University’s (OHSU) Knight Cancer Institute has named Shivaani Kummar as interim CEO. She will hold the position until OHSU's next president picks a permanent head.
Kummar will also take on the newly established role of chief of the Cancer Business Unit, helping integrate OHSU’s clinical oncology services with Legacy Health System, should the institutions merge.

OHSU interim president Steve Stadum said Kummar's appointment comes at an important time for the institute, which is the only National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center between Seattle and Sacramento.

“The Knight Cancer chief executive provides strategic leadership for the Knight Cancer Institute’s research, clinical, and education programs and is the primary internal and external representative of the institute,” Stadum wrote in a letter announcing Kummar’s appointment.

Kummar, who joined OHSU from Stanford University in 2020, is the head of the OHSU School of Medicine's Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology and co-director of the Knight Cancer Institute's Center for Experimental Therapeutics. In 2022, she was named co-director of the Knight Cancer Institute with Lisa Coussens.

Her clinical experience focuses on early-stage clinical trials and patient care. She was recently named to the National Cancer Policy Forum, a division of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, where she contributes to major policy concerns in cancer research and treatment.
