The Shree Swaminarayan Mandir in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England, hosted a well-being event to address mental health stigmas in the South Asian communities.

The event was coordinated by the temple’s Yuvak Mandal – a youth group committed to serving the community. The youth group partnered with local well-being charities for the session.

The decision to organize the event was taken after concerned authorities recognized the need to address mental health concerns amongst the temple’s multi-generational congregation.

Furthermore, it was a part of the temple’s monthly sessions held on the evening of the last Saturday of each month. “These interactive and informative sessions will cover a range of topics, including mental health, fitness, nutrition, motivation, time management, and personal reflections,” the temple said in an Instagram post. The theme of these events named ‘Saturday Unplugged’ is “Explore. Connect. Evolve.

Karen Hughes, a representative from Tameside Oldham and Glossop Mind, said: “TOG Mind strives to enable everyone in our communities to achieve better mental health. We actively seek to provide awareness to the public and groups through our new Mental Health Awareness sessions, aiming to tackle the stigma around mental health, and promote ways to wellbeing. We are proud to be working with the community of the Oldham Temple.”

Temple secretary Vinod Vekaria praised the Yuvak Mandal for doing a “brilliant job” engaging with the community. “The upcoming wellness event is a testament to how forward-thinking they are. They’re so committed to addressing contemporary issues that have become commonplace in the community. I’m proud to have them working to build the community engagement we’re known for and being so proactive when doing so,” he added.
