Oscar nominee Dev Patel, known for his roles in ‘Lion’ and ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ has made his directorial debut with the action thriller ‘Monkey Man.’
The film follows the narrative of one man's relentless quest for vengeance against corrupt leaders responsible for the murder of his mother and the ongoing oppression of the poor and powerless.
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, symbolizing strength and courage, Patel stars as Kid, an anonymous young man surviving in an underground fight club. Night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he endures brutal beatings by more popular fighters for cash.
After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city's sinister elite. Fueled by childhood trauma, his mysteriously scarred hands become the catalyst for an explosive campaign of retribution against the men who robbed him of everything.
‘Monkey Man’ is based on his original story, with the screenplay co-written by Paul Angunawela and John Collee (‘Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World’).
The film’s cast includes notable names such as Sharlto Copley (‘District 9’), Sobhita Dhulipala (‘Made in Heaven’), Pitobash (‘Million Dollar Arm’), Vipin Sharma (‘Hotel Mumbai’), Ashwini Kalsekar (‘Ek Tha Hero’), Adithi Kalkunte (‘Hotel Mumbai’), Sikandar Kher (‘Aarya’), and Makarand Deshpande (‘RRR’).
The film is produced by Dev Patel, Jomon Thomas (‘Hotel Mumbai’ and ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’), and Oscar winner Jordan Peele (‘Nope’ and ‘Get Out’), among others. Serving as executive producers are Jonathan Fuhrman, Natalya Pavchinskya, Aaron L. Gilbert, Andria Spring, Alison-Jane Roney, and Steven Thibault.
The movie is set to release on April 19, 2024.
