British-Indian-American musician, Anoushka Shankar will receive an honorary degree from the Oxford University on Jun.19 during the university’s annual Encaenia academic ceremony.
The Grammy-nominated artist announced the news on her Instagram saying, “I’m still pinching myself…and I’m slightly dumbstruck. I’m getting my first ever honorary degree from none other than Oxford University.”
Shankar who started learning the sitar as a child under her father, Ravi Shankar, made her performing debut aged 13. Since then she has released ten studio albums, three live albums and numerous collaborative recordings.
As an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, she was one of the first female composers to be added to the A-Level music syllabus by one of Britain’s biggest exam boards.
Apart from her music career, Shankar frequently works with organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and Choose Love, to raise funds and awareness for the refugee crisis.
Alongside Shankar, Indo-Canadian cardiologist and epidemiologist, Salim Yusuf, whose work has substantially influenced prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease will also receive a honorary degree by the university.
