Lifestyle medicine specialist, Padmaja Patel, was appointed president of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) for the 2025-2027 term.
Known for her work in developing care models to prevent and reverse chronic diseases, Patel will lead the 13,000-member organization at a time of significant growth and momentum for the field.
Highlighting the growing burden of chronic diseases in the U.S., Patel emphasized the urgent need for a shift in healthcare delivery as she assumed the presidency of ACLM. She stated, "The traditional healthcare delivery model has failed to address the U.S. crisis of chronic disease and its associated costs."
Patel underscored the increasing recognition of lifestyle medicine as a transformative approach to healthcare, adding, "As a result, policymakers, health leaders ,and health systems are recognizing the exceptional value of the patient-centered, whole-person approach that puts lifestyle medicine at the foundation of health and healthcare with the clinical goal of restoring health rather than simply managing symptoms."
Describing lifestyle medicine as a "viable, sustainable solution" to the problems plaguing the current "sick care" system, Patel expressed her commitment to advancing the field. " I am honored to lead an organization whose members are restoring their patients' health," she said.
With 20 years of experience as an internal medicine physician, Patel has served as system medical director for lifestyle medicine at Wellvana Health and medical director at the Lifestyle Medicine Center at Midland Health. Her work has also focused on reducing employee healthcare costs through lifestyle medicine initiatives.
Patel’s appointment coincides with ACLM’s 20th anniversary, a milestone marked by rapid growth in the field of lifestyle medicine. As president, she aims to continue advancing the role of lifestyle medicine as a core element of health system redesign.
In addition to her ACLM role, Patel serves as vice president of the World Lifestyle Medicine Organization and holds leadership positions at Midland Quality Alliance, the National Quality Forum, and other healthcare bodies.
