Payal Kapadia's film wins at NYFCC after Golden Globe snub

Indian director Payal Kapadia’s film ‘All We Imagine As Light’ has won the Best International Feature award at the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) Awards, marking a significant achievement in Indian cinema.
Kapadia, an FTII graduate, is celebrated for her directorial debut, which has garnered international acclaim, including the Grand Prix award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. At the NYFCC event, she shared her excitement, revealing that renowned actress Jodie Foster had watched the film twice, further underlining its global appeal.

Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light was a strong contender at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, where it earned nominations for Best Director (Motion Picture) and Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language.
Despite the critical acclaim surrounding the film, it ultimately lost the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language category to Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language French musical crime comedy directed by Jacques Audiard. Kapadia also lost the Best Director award to Brady Corbet for The Brutalist.
While the setback at the Golden Globes was a disappointment, the film’s recognition at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards has reaffirmed its exceptional quality and Kapadia’s remarkable talent, further solidifying her place in the international filmmaking scene.
