The University of Pennsylvania’s School of Engineering and Applied Science has named associate professor Deep Jariwala as the 2025 recipient of the S. Reid Warren, Jr. Award.
Presented annually in conjunction with the Penn Engineering Alumni Society, the award recognizes faculty members for outstanding service in mentoring and guiding the intellectual and professional development of undergraduate students.

Jariwala, the Peter and Susanne Armstrong Distinguished Scholar, was selected by the undergraduate student body for his dedication to teaching, mentorship and student advocacy.
Students praised Jariwala’s engaging lectures and his emphasis on understanding over rote learning. “what makes Professor Jariwala so deserving of this award is his dedication to teaching students. He always emphasized the importance of learning and understanding the material, rather than solely worrying about grades.”
Jariwala’s research focuses on solid-state opto-electronics and emerging low-dimensional materials.He joined Penn in 2018 after a postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech and currently leads a research group of over 10 scholars. His work has earned him multiple prestigious awards and over 19,000 citations across 140 journal publications.
Jariwala also serves as chair of the AVS Mid-Atlantic Chapter and vice-chair of the Nanoscale Science and Technology Division.
He completed his undergraduate degree in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, in 2010 and earned his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University in 2015.
