PM Modi condoles death of Indian-American legal scholar Ved Prakash Nanda

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Indian-American academician Ved Prakash Nanda, who passed away on January 1, 2024.

Indian-American academician Ved Prakash Nanda passed away on Monday, January 1, 2024, a report by The Statesman revealed. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a message on social media to condole the death of Nanda, a reputed legal scholar and prominent member of the Indian diaspora in the US.

"Deeply saddened by the passing away of Professor Ved Prakash Nanda Ji, a distinguished academic whose contributions to the legal field are invaluable. His work highlights his strong commitment to legal education. He was also a prominent member of the Indian diaspora in USA and was passionate about strong India-USA relations. Condolences to his family and friends," PM Modi wrote on social media.



Nanda received the Padma Bhushan award in 2018 for his contribution in the field of literature and education. The legal scholar was a professor of International Law at the University of Denver, Colorado. Among his multiple roles at the University, he served as the Founding Director and Director Emeritus of the International Legal Studies Program.

In 2006, the international law expert was honored with a US$ 1 million from DU alumni Doug and Mary Scrivner for the launch of the Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law. The Center began its operations in 2007 with hosting programs for lawyers, students and community participants and promoting scholarship in the field of international law.

Nanda who hailed from Gujranwala in Punjab, served as the president of the World Jurist Association and vice president of the American Society of International Law. Furthermore, he was a member of the advisory council of the United States Institute of Human Rights.

Nanda also served as the chairman of the Board of Hindu University of America. He has authored or co-authored 24 books in various fields of international law. Other accolades under his hat include the Gandhi-King-Ikeda Community Builder's Award.
