On Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to the Indian diaspora and praised their efforts to preserve cultural heritage and forge stronger global connections. The Indian diaspora, he said, was doing a great job of spreading Indian culture and values around the world and bringing people together despite their differences.

Taking to X, PM Modi wrote: "Greetings on Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas. This is a day to celebrate the contributions and achievements of the Indian diaspora worldwide. Their dedication towards preserving our rich heritage and strengthening global ties is commendable. They embody the spirit of India across the globe, fostering a sense of unity and diversity."

Extending his greetings on the occasion, Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar posted on his official social media account, "On Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, greetings to the Indian Diaspora across the world. We take immense pride in your achievements. Your outstanding contributions play a crucial role in enhancing India's global standing."

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated on January 9 every year to commemorate the significant contributions of the Overseas Indian community to India's development. The date, January 9, holds historical significance as it marks the day in 1915 when Mahatma Gandhi, a prominent Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa.

Since 2015, the format of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) has been revised to celebrate the event once every two years. In the intervening years, theme-based PBD Conferences are organized, featuring participation from overseas diaspora experts, policy makers, and stakeholders. These conventions serve as a platform for the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and people of their ancestral land, fostering mutually beneficial activities.

The 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention took place from January 8 to 10, 2023, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, as the Partner State. The theme for the 17th PBD was "Diaspora: Reliable partners for India’s progress in Amrit Kaal.”
