Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Chalo India Global Diaspora campaign in Kashmir on March 7. The campaign was simultaneously launched in all Indian embassies and high commissions worldwide.
This follows the prime minister's strong request that members of the diaspora encourage at least five non-Indian friends to visit India as a tourist destination. He further appealed to non-resident Indians to visit India and help establish the country as a tourist hotspot.
“With more than 3 crore (30 million) overseas Indians, the Indian diaspora can serve as a powerful catalyst for Indian tourism, acting as cultural Ambassador,” an official statement from his office noted.
In this regard, the Indian Ministry of Tourism will launch a portal for NRIs to nominate their friends and associates, along with their contact details. The ministry will reach out to them directly with specific publicity material, according to a report.
Additionally, Modi launched the ‘Dekho Apna Desh People’s Choice 2024’ initiative where 40 places across India will be identified as the preferred tourist destinations of choice with help from the local public. These places will be developed as tourist destinations in the next two years.
The Indian consulate in New York is also working with the Ministry of Tourism and the Indian government to boost tourism in the country, with efforts including conducting webinars, such as ‘Wedding Destinations in India’ on February 17. During the webinar, locations that offer a rich blend of music, local customs, culture, and a diverse range of settings such as desert, forest, beach, palace, and spiritual locales, across the country were highlighted.
