Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations in New York on Sept. 23, focusing on India’s vision for a sustainable world and global governance reform. The Summit, themed ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,’ saw participation from numerous world leaders.
In his address, the Prime Minister emphasized India’s commitment to peace, development, and prosperity, speaking on behalf of one-sixth of humanity. He stated, “When we are discussing Global Future, we must accord the highest priority to a Human-centric approach,” and highlighted India’s achievement in lifting 250 million people out of poverty over the past decade, asserting, “We have demonstrated that Sustainable Development can be Successful.” He expressed solidarity with nations in the Global South, offering India's development experiences and digital public infrastructure for broader global benefit.
The Prime Minister stressed that “Success of Humanity lies in our collective strength, not in the battlefield,” and called for urgent reforms of global institutions, particularly the UN Security Council. He emphasized that “Reform is the key to relevance,” and noted that global action must align with global ambition in addressing threats like terrorism and emerging conflicts in cyberspace and beyond.
He also underscored the need for balanced regulations for technology use, asserting that “Digital Public Infrastructure should be a Bridge, not a Barrier.” Reiterating India’s dedication to the principle of "One Earth, One Family, One Future," he expressed that this commitment is reflected in initiatives like "One Earth, One Health” and "One Sun, One World, One Grid."
The Summit concluded with the adoption of a key outcome document, "A Pact for the Future," accompanied by annexes including the Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations.
