The Maharishi Valmiki International Airport in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a few weeks before the Ram Mandir inauguration.

Modi later spoke at a public event where he expressed happiness about the naming of the airport after Valmiki, an Indian poet who wrote the famed epic Ramayana. Modi called the epic a “path of knowledge which connects us to Shri Ram,” in the speech.

The Ram Mandir inauguration is scheduled to begin on January 16, 2024, and the consecration ceremony will be held on January 22. Modi said the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport will connect people to Ayodhya Dham and the “divine-grand-new Ram temple.” The airport can initially accommodate 1,000,000 passengers per year.

Phase 1 of the state-of-the-art airport has been developed at a cost of more than US$ 175 million. With a façade inspired by Ayodhya's Ram Mandir, the 6,500 square meter airport terminal building will be a sight to behold. Local artwork, paintings, and murals that depict the life of Lord Ram adorn the interiors.

Insulated roofing, LED lighting, rainwater collection, landscape with fountains, a water treatment facility, a sewage treatment facility, a solar power facility, and other sustainable features are also incorporated into the airport structure.

Phase 2 of the airport will cater to six million commuters annually. The airport is said to improve connectivity in the region as well as lead to a boost in tourism, business activities, and employment activities, according to a press release.

Alongside the airport, PM Modi also inaugurated the redeveloped Ayodhya Railway Station and flagged off new Amrit Bharat and Vande Bharat trains. He also laid the foundation stone of multiple development projects, for the beautification and revamping of civil facilities in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath thanked Modi for helping Ayodhya to move towards “becoming state-of-the-art Ayodhya with its supernatural power.” “Today, the precious gifts given by the Prime Minister to the people of Ayodhya will prove to be a milestone in making 'Ram Nagari' the most beautiful and convenient city in the world,” his post on X, further read.
