California-based healthcare provider Prime Healthcare, which operates 44 hospitals and over 300 outpatient centers in 14 states, has appointed Indian-American physician Sunny Bhatia as its first national president.
Bhatia has been with Prime Healthcare since 2011, beginning as chief medical officer at Sherman Oaks Hospital and Encino Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles. His leadership and expertise led to his promotion to corporate chief medical officer and later CEO of Prime Healthcare’s Region I, overseeing operations at 16 hospitals across California and Nevada.
“It’s my honor and privilege to serve and expand Prime Healthcare’s mission to preserve and improve community hospitals across our nation,” said Bhatia. “I am continually inspired by the work of our physicians and staff. This is a pivotal time in the healthcare industry, and I am confident that Prime’s commitment to ensuring health equity and social responsibility will ultimately improve the health and well-being of all those we serve.”
Under Bhatia's leadership, Prime Healthcare has earned over 500 clinical excellence awards, including being named among the nation’s "100 Top Hospitals" 69 times. The health system has also been honored with numerous Patient Safety Excellence Awards and was recently recognized as one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for 2024 by Newsweek.
One of Bhatia’s most significant accomplishments includes his role in Prime Healthcare’s largest acquisition: the purchase agreement with Ascension for nine hospitals and associated facilities in the Chicago area. This acquisition is a key example of Prime’s ongoing efforts to expand healthcare access nationwide.
Prime Healthcare’s founder, Prem Reddy, will continue as chairman and CEO, praising Bhatia’s leadership and dedication to community healthcare. “Bhatia’s visionary leadership and deep commitment to serving patients and communities has led Prime Healthcare to continually innovate and earn accolades for clinically excellent care,” said Reddy.
Bhatia holds quadruple board certifications in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, nuclear cardiology, and interventional cardiology, and a Master of Medical Management degree from University of Southern California Marshall School of Business.
